Red Wigglers (Eisenia Fetida) are the most common species of composting worm. Red Wigglers consume great quantities of organic material, digest it, extract it's food value and expel the residue as worm castings which are very rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and many micronutrients. Under ideal conditions, E. Fetida can eat their body weight each day. They also reproduce rapidly and are very tolerant of variations in growing conditions. For fishing, we have found these to be an amazing bait, we have caught countless white and yellow perch, bluegill, shellcrackers, catfish and mountain trout on red wigglers. If you are looking to grow bait sized worms, then feed these a high protein mazuri earthworm diet or alfalfa pellets. Red Wigglers are the smallest worm you can use for bait, but the fish love them, so we keep on fishing with them.
NC red wigglers does not sell Indian Blue Worms aka Perionyx Excavatus. Many worm sellers sell red wiggler mixes that include this species of worm. Blue Worms are tropical worms and therefore are intolerant of some growing conditions. In a cold climate, they will crawl out of the worm bed and die. In a warm climate, they can outcompete red wigglers and become the dominant species in your worm bin. Also, the skin of a blue worm is far too tender to make them a usable bait worm. Currently most suppliers are contaminated with blue worms. We have worked hard to ensure that our operation is not contaminated with this undesirable worm species, and to ensure quality, we never drop ship worms from other farms.
